Setting Measurable Goals For Your Simple work From Home Opportunity
Copyright by Ying Hong 2008
One of the toughest
things for Internet Newbies is to find
their bearings in the jungle of an internet.
How do I know if what I am doing is enough? Or how much more effort
should I put into it
to make a difference?
These
are indeed difficult questions to answer as the
situation may be different for everybody.
However, there are some general guidelines
that you can go by to start
getting your own bearings.

1.
Know Your Keywords
Knowing
your keywords is the starting point of your whole
host of reference points. Your goal is to get to the top of the search
results
for certain keywords. If
you are a
newbie, you should start with a long tail keyword phrase, as the
shorter ones
are too competitive already. Optimize
your website with the chosen keyword phrase. Then start doing the
offline
optimization campaign, which means article marketing, blogging, social
book
marking, web directory submissions, etc.
The selection of keyword
merits a whole other article, which
I have written. Read it here.
2.
Establish A Measurable Goal
A
measurable goal really refers to basically one thing:
number of backlinks. The reference point comes from your competitors.
To find
it, do a search in Google of your keyword phrase in quotes. This will tell you how
many sites have
optimized on the same keyword phrase.
The
site that comes on the top is your number one competitor.
Then
run your top competitor through Linkpopularity.com and
see how many backlinks
your competitor has in Google, Yahoo, and MSN

3.
Action Plan
Say
your competitor has 10,000 backlinks in Yahoo (Google
does not show all of the backlinks in its link query result; so go by
Yahoo). How
much work do you have to do to beat it?
Let’s
do the math.
Case
1 – Write
2
articles/week and each submitted to 10 directories.
2 articles
x 52 weeks x 10 directories = 1040 links / year
In
reality, there is also the distribution rate which means
the number of times web publishers and free content seekers grab and
publish
your articles on their own sites. I have seen my articles generate 30,
50 and
close to 100 links each whereas others have reported having thousands
of links
from one title. To
be conservative, let’s
assume rate at 10 times/article. The
above
formula would be modified to read:
2
articles x 52 weeks x 10
directories x 10 distribution rate = 10,400 links / year
10,000
links /10400 = 0.96 yr, or
11.5 months
This means in less than a
year, you will reach the number of
links that your competitor site has just by doing article marketing
alone.
Case
2 – Case 1 scenario + web directory submissions at
10/day
2
articles x 52 weeks x 10
directories x 10 times + 3650 = 14,050 links / year
10,000
links/14,050 = 0.71 yr, or 8.5
months
In
reality, you will probably be blogging frequently to help
generate more backlinks. You may also have time to do forum posting and
blog
commenting, which will add more backlinks, which in turn will shorten
the time
it takes to catch up to your competitor.
Your
competitor will not stay static, either.
Depending on how determined your competitor is
to stay on the top, you may need to up the ante on your effort to catch
up or
surpass him/her.
You
can see that setting measurable goals is as easy as
ABC. But reaching
the goals can take
time. If you want to get to the top sooner than a year, in the above
scenarios,
you would have to have an action plan of doing at least 2 articles/week
consistently plus some solid additional effort.
Otherwise, you may risk not making any impact
with your home business
effort.
